Project update - February 2023

28 February 2023

We need your support

Star of the South will bring long-term jobs, new investment and large-scale renewable power as coal power stations retire this decade.

But we need your help to make this happen.

We need a new ‘feasibility licence’ to continue work and be in the running for a further ‘commercial licence’ to build the project down the track.

To throw your support behind the project, become a Star of the South supporter today.

Gone fishin'

We hit the water again in February to survey pelagic fish in Bass Strait.

Over two weeks, scientists from RPS and Deakin University used echo-sounders to find the fish, underwater video cameras fitted with bait to attract and film fish, and line fishing to survey their size and age.

The surveys have collected important data on local fish species which will add to existing knowledge of the marine environment.

Thanks to the local vessel owners, Tony and Brian for bringing their knowledge and expertise to support these surveys.

Meet Paul, our Regional Engagement Manager

We’re excited to welcome Paul Johnson to our team, leading our Gippsland-based community and stakeholder engagement.

Paul, a Sale local, loves living and working in the region. As a lover of the outdoors, one of his favourite places to visit is the Gippsland Lakes – although he also enjoys exploring areas closer to home while walking his greyhound Maree with his family.

Paul brings many years of experience working across Gippsland and building relationships with locals. He’s looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting new people as we work toward bringing Star of the South to Gippsland.

Come and say hello to Paul at our Gippsland office when you’re next in Yarram or at one of our events.

Learning from our colleagues in Taiwan

Star of the South is a project backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) – one of the world’s leading green investment fund managers with significant experience in developing and delivering offshore wind around the world.

Our team members Erin and Matt recently met with colleagues at the CIP Taiwan office, where they have multiple offshore wind projects in development and construction.

Erin said the trip was a great opportunity to learn more about the challenges - and success stories - from overseas offshore wind markets.

"The teams in Taiwan have worked collaboratively across government, industry and the supply chain to secure strong outcomes, helping to build its offshore wind industry from the ground up.

"There are many lessons we can learn through global collaboration to ensure a successful emerging Australian offshore wind market,” she said.

New local artwork in our Gippsland office

Our Gippsland office now has the ‘seal’ of approval.

This mural of an Australian Fur Seal took artist Lautaro Musse Art less than two days to paint.

This is the first mural in a series that will create a new art trail in Yarram.

Lauti and his partner moved to Yarram from Argentina three years ago, arriving after the pandemic to work on a local farm. He explained to our team that the Heesco murals were a factor in his choice to stay in Gippsland.

‘Finding so much art in a place far away from the city captivated me – then meeting local people helped us decide to stay’.

If you’d like to drop in and see Lautaro’s incredible work, our office is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9 am-5 pm, or by appointment on other days.

Help shape the future of Latrobe Valley and Gippsland

The Latrobe Valley Authority is building a Transition Plan to address the significant changes currently happening across key sectors, including energy, forestry, and agriculture.

The plan will explore future opportunities and set out a shared vision for the community.

To identify and support local aspirations, Latrobe Valley Authority is seeking the community's feedback on their draft.
