Gippslanders discuss offshore wind in Canberra
Earlier this month we invited politicians and policymakers in Canberra to hear about the opportunities offshore wind energy can create for regional communities.
Gippslanders Daniel Miller, CEO of the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation, and Tony Wolfe shared their views on how offshore wind can positively contribute to the region’s future.
Tony started out as a 15-year-old apprentice at the Hazelwood coal-fired power station. Now, he has a six-year-old granddaughter and says he wants her to have an opportunity to enter the local energy industry, with long-term career prospects, rather than leaving home in 10 years to find work.

Fact or fiction?
Wondering if something you read or heard about offshore wind is true? Here are a few common myths – and the facts.
Myth: Offshore wind projects with feasibility licences can now start construction.
Fact: A feasibility licence is the first approval needed to plan an offshore wind farm. There are many more steps – including environmental and planning approvals, management plans and a commercial licence – before projects can proceed to construction.
Myth: I won’t be able to go fishing or boating in the offshore wind farm.
Fact: We’re committed to sharing the waters. We’ll ask that people keep clear of construction areas – however once the wind farm is operating, fishing and boating can continue.
Myth: Seismic blasting is used for offshore wind investigations and construction.
Fact: We won't use seismic blasting for investigations or turbine installation. The geophysical survey and geotechnical surveys for offshore wind are different to those used in oil and gas exploration. Find out more from the Offshore Infrastructure Regulator.
