Gippsland offshore wind licences announced

We’re excited to share that Star of the South has secured one of the first Australian feasibilities licences for offshore wind – with a second licence awarded to our new Gippsland project Kut-Wut Brataualung.

  • Star of the South is an up to 2.2 GW project, proposed to be located at least 10 km off the Gippsland coast. We’ve already completed site investigations for Star of the South over the past five years, with more work to come over the coming years on the next stages of approvals.

  • Kut-Wut Brataualung is a new and earlier stage 2.2 GW project named in partnership with Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation. We look forward to applying what we’ve learned on Star of the South and working with local communities to progress this exciting project.

Together these two projects have the potential to power more than 4 million homes, inject $14 billion into the Australian economy – including up to $7 billion in Gippsland – and create up to 12,000 jobs over the life of the projects – including hundreds of ongoing long-term Gippsland-based jobs during 30 years of operations.

A feasibility licence is the first approval needed to investigate and plan an offshore wind farm. Further approvals are needed to proceed to construction, incorporating years of community and stakeholder engagement as projects work through the different development stages.

We’re pleased to have this opportunity to keep growing Australia’s offshore wind industry to meet energy and climate goals – including Victoria’s offshore wind target of 9 GW by 2040.

As we advance these projects, we remain committed to working with Gippslanders to develop responsible projects that are right for the region, while creating a long-term pipeline of jobs, supply opportunities and local investment.
